Celebrating Achievement: Northside Partnership Challenger Programme Graduation 2026

On Tuesday, May 19th, 2026, at 7.00pm, Dublin City University (DCU) played host to an inspiring and memorable milestone event—the Northside Partnership Challenger Programme Graduation. The evening brought together students, families, educators, and community partners to celebrate the hard work, growth, and achievements of this year’s Challenger participants.

A Warm Welcome and Reflection

Proceedings began with a slideshow showcasing highlights from across the year’s Challenger activities. The images captured the spirit of the programme: curiosity, collaboration, and confidence in action.

Dearbhail Butler of Northside Partnership officially welcomed attendees, acknowledging special guests including Aidan O’Driscoll of DCU Access Services, Paul Rogers (CEO of Northside Partnership), committee members, teachers, principals, parents, and—most importantly—the students.

Mary Hickey, Chair of Northside Partnership, followed with an address that reinforced the programme’s mission: to support young people in reaching their full educational potential and to nurture ambition through opportunity.

Student Voices at the Heart of the Programme

A highlight of the evening was the series of student presentations, each offering a personal reflection on the diverse Challenger activities undertaken throughout the year.

From JJ Donnelly’s experience in the 6th Class Reading Club to Tadgh Norris Ryan’s journey through Conversational Irish, students spoke with confidence and pride. Other reflections included:

  • Cultural tours such as Glasnevin Cemetery Museum
  • A behind-the-scenes experience at Croke Park, shared by Daniel Osdoshen
  • The Lilliput Adventure Centre trip, recounted by Scout Laure and Mia Oakes
  • Academic enrichment modules, including DCU Maths and coding programmes delivered to younger cohorts
  • Fourth-year engagements in STEPS at DCU, as well as study skills and CV preparation workshops

The breadth of experiences highlighted the programme’s holistic approach—combining academic support, cultural exposure, and personal development.

A special moment came with a recorded contribution from Coláiste Acla, further underlining the programme’s collaborative reach.

The student presentation segment concluded with a thoughtful overview from sixth-year student Erin Murray, reflecting on the collective journey of her cohort.

Recognising Excellence and Effort

The awards ceremony celebrated not only achievement but perseverance and growth. Certificates for Outstanding Effort were presented to students from 1st year through to 6th year by Jeannette Beirnes, acknowledging the commitment shown across all levels of the programme.

Aidan O’Driscoll of DCU Access Services addressed the audience, emphasising the importance of pathways to further and higher education and praising the students’ dedication.

Graduates of the PASS (Peer Assisted Study Support) programme, Stephane Hennessy and Paul Duffy, shared their experiences, offering relatable insight and encouragement to current participants.

Honouring Educational Excellence

Anne Morris presents Ela Isik with the Lorcán Ó hObáin Award for Educational Excellence

A standout moment of the evening was the presentation of the Dr. Lorcán Ó hÓbáin Educational Excellence Award. Introduced by Dearbhail Butler, the award was presented by Anne Morris to Ela Isik in recognition of her exceptional academic achievement and commitment.

Throughout her time on the Challenger Programme, Ela proved herself to be an exceptional student and role model. She generously gave her time volunteering at opening evenings, supporting programme tours, and assisting at registration events. Her dedication and consistency were reflected in her remarkable achievement of winning Student of the Year every year from 6th class through to 6th year. An excellent ambassador for the programme, Ela’s journey was marked by a notable growth in confidence, culminating in the poised and inspiring young woman celebrated on the night.

Now a first-year student at Trinity College Dublin, Ela spoke with humility and inspiration about her journey through the Challenger Programme and how it shaped her aspirations and success.

Celebrating Families and Community

The evening also acknowledged the vital role of parents and guardians. Mags Kane spoke about the STEPS programme, followed by a recording from Adrienne Hayes highlighting the parent experience.

Certificates were awarded to parents who participated in the programme, recognising their support as a key component of student success.

Mags Kane, a parent representative, also addressed the audience, sharing heartfelt reflections on the value of the Challenger Programme in their family’s educational journey.

Closing and Community Connection

Dearbhail Butler closed the ceremony by thanking all contributors and celebrating the collective achievements of the Challenger community. Guests were then invited to continue the celebrations over refreshments, providing an opportunity for connection, reflection, and shared pride.

Looking Ahead

The 2026 Challenger Programme Graduation was more than a ceremony—it was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when students are supported, encouraged, and empowered. As this year’s graduates move forward, they carry with them the confidence, skills, and ambition nurtured through the programme.

Northside Partnership remains committed to supporting the next generation of learners, and this year’s graduates are a testament to the lasting impact of that mission.
